Sierra Nevada blizzard conditions
Mountain travel is “highly discouraged” into early
According to the National Weather Service, portions of the Sierra Nevada are gearing up for a blizzard that could cause “near to impossible” travel conditions. Expect at a minimum some travel delays and road closures.
A blizzard is different from regular snowfall. The extreme weather event typically includes icy temperatures, high winds and decreased visibility, according to the National Geographic Society.
A winter storm warning is in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday. A Blizzard Warning will be in effect from 4 a.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The last blizzard warning was issued more than two years ago in January 2021, the National Weather Service wrote on its Twitter page.
Somewhere from around 1 foot to 7 feet of snow could fall across the Sierra Nevada from Monday to Wednesday. The northern part of the Sacramento Valley is forecast to receive 1 to 5 inches of snow from Monday to Tuesday.
