Dramatic video shows wind gusts flinging, battering ski lift chairs before resort closes

While another late-season storm hits the Lake Tahoe and Sacramento area in California, dramatic video shows chairs on a lift in another part of the world — at Matterhorn Ski Paradise, in Cervinia, Italy — being tossed about by high wind gusts of 62 mph on Thursday.

A video shot by Marco Malcangi shows the terrifying scene at the Cretaz chairlift. Malcangi posted a caption on Instagram Reels that said one person was thrown from the chair but survived.

Citing local media reports, Snowbrains said the winds went from 12 mph to 62 mph in a matter of minutes.

Ten chairs were damaged and removed from the lift, Snowbrains, a ski and weather news source, reported, but the lift still reopened the next day.

“This lift in Cervinia (Cretaz) closed just before we got on! Scary! Few people are stuck on lifts and some clearly damaged by huge gusts!” @MrCrabtreePE posted on Twitter.

Matterhorn Ski Paradise is a world-renowned ski resort in the Alps.
