There’s more rain in the forecast for Sacramento, plus freezing temperatures. Here’s when
The wet weather is not over yet, Sacramento.
After below-freezing temperatures chill Northern California, another atmospheric river system is set to hit the region, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologist Bill Rasch said this new system is “very similar” to three previous atmospheric river systems that brought more than two inches of rain to Sacramento in one week.
Here’s what to know about the forecast:
When and where is freeze warning in effect?
The freeze warning will be in effect for the Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley from 10 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday, the weather service said.
“Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30” are expected for the area, the agency said.
Cities impacted by the warning include Sacramento, Modesto and Stockton, as well as Alder Springs, Chico, Fairfield, Marysville, Oroville, Paradise, Red Bluff, Redding, Suisun and Yuba City.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops (and) other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service said.
When is the rain coming to Sacramento?
The atmospheric river-fueled storm is expected to arrive Wednesday night and last through Friday, according to Rasch.
According to a forecast discussion released Monday by weather service’s Sacramento office, precipitation on Wednesday could be “on the lighter side,” with up to a quarter of an inch of rain predicted.
As of Monday, the amount of precipitation expected through Friday was still unclear, according to a weather service infographic.
The infographic said the Valley could see “moderate to heavy rain” during this time.
Will the Sierra Nevada get more snow?
The Sierra Nevada is forecast to get multiple feet of snow through Friday, Rasch said.
The forecast discussion said elevations as low as 3,000 feet could see small amounts of snow on Wednesday. Higher elevations may get up to three inches.
The “main brunt” of the system is expected overnight Wednesday into Thursday, according to Rasch.
By the end of the week, he said, the Sierra Nevada could see three to five feet of snow.
“Travel will be extremely difficult mainly on Thursday,” Rasch said. “If people have plans to get up to the Sierra, (they should) plan ahead and try to avoid the time of the heavy snow.”
What’s in the weather forecast for Sacramento?
The weather service forecast sunny skies in Sacramento on Monday, with a high temperature around 55 degrees and a low temperature around 32.
Tuesday could start off chilly with widespread frost between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Sacramento is expected to be mostly sunny through the day. The high will be 54 and the low will be 38.
