Rain, gusty winds to hit Sacramento through St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Here’s what to expect

Rain showers and gusty winds will saturate the Sacramento area through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Multiple rain systems are expected to hit Sacramento throughout the rest of the week, said Dakari Anderson, a meteorologist with the weather service Sacramento office.

Much of the Central Valley will be under a wind advisory starting late Tuesday, with gusty winds “blow(ing) around unsecured objects” and potentially tree limbs, according to the advisory.

Here’s when you can expect wet weather.

How much will it rain in Sacramento?

According to Anderson, the Sacramento area can expect between one inch and one-quarter of an inch of rain between Wednesday morning and Thursday night.

Showers are expected to start after 4 a.m. Wednesday and last through 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the weather service’s forecast for Sacramento.

There is about a 15% to 25% chance of thunderstorms developing over the Capital Region in the late morning to early afternoon on Thursday, Anderson said.

Another system is expected to bring about a quarter-inch of rain on Friday before briefly letting up on Saturday.

Sunday afternoon could see a third weather system with “light showers” into Monday, St. Patrick’s Day, according to Anderson.

How strong will winds blow?

Southerly winds are forecast to be around 15 to 25 mph, with a chance of wind gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph, according to the weather service wind advisory.

The advisory will be in place from Tuesday at 8 p.m. through 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Areas under the wind advisory span as north as Shasta County and south to Stanislaus County, including:

  • Modesto
  • Stockton
  • Grass Valley
  • Jackson
  • Paradise
  • Chico
  • Redding
  • Red Bluff
  • Oroville
  • Marysville
  • Yuba City

What’s in the forecast for Sacramento?

The weather service’s Sacramento forecast Tuesday showed a sunny, breezy outlook with gusts reaching 21 mph.

There is a 30% chance of showers starting after 4 a.m. and increasing beyond noon. Through the day, a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain is expected.

Wind gusts could reach 34 mph on Wednesday. The high is forecast to be 57, and the low will be 42.

Another quarter-inch to half-inch of rain is possible overnight into Thursday. Later during the day, there is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service.

The rain is expected to slow down around 11 p.m. Thursday before resuming on Friday.

The weather service forecasts Saturday to be dry, but showers could pick up Sunday and last through Monday.
