Early-season storm sweeps Sacramento area. How much rain have we gotten so far?
An early-season storm sweeping through Northern California dropped more than an inch of rain in some parts of the Sacramento region, according to the National Weather Service.
Moisture from Tropical Cyclone Priscilla spread across the state on Monday, Oct. 13, and early Tuesday, Oct. 14, bringing showers, strong winds and the possibility of thunderstorms, the weather service said.
The rain was expected to continue through Tuesday afternoon, according to an X post by the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office.
“Scattered showers will continue through much of the afternoon with lingering mountain showers into the evening,” the weather service wrote on X on Tuesday. “Please continue to exercise caution on your commutes and allow extra time to reach your destination.”

How much rainfall did Sacramento region get?
Over the past two days, at least two spots in Sacramento region received more than an inch of rain, according to the weather service’s Sacramento office.
As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, here’s how much rain fell in the Sacramento area over the past 48 hours, according to weather service data:
- Sacramento: 0.77 inches of rain
- Sacramento International Airport: 0.73 inches
- Folsom: 0.32 inches
- Rocklin: 0.57 inches
- El Dorado Hills: 0.38 inches
- Cameron Park: 0.51 inches
- Auburn: 0.35 inches
- UC Davis: 1.02 inches
- Placerville: 0.40 inches
- Pollock Pines: 0.11 inches
In comparison, Oakdale in Stanislaus County recorded 0.87 inches of rain over the same 48-hour period, while Newman saw 0.46 inches of rain, the weather service said.
Over the past 24 hours, Fresno saw 0.61 inches of rain, Merced recorded 1.01 inches of rainfall and Madera had 0.75 inches of precipitation, according to the weather service’s Hanford office.
What’s in the weather forecast for Sacramento?
Showers were likely in the Sacramento area on Tuesday, when the high temperature was expected to reach 57 degrees, according to the latest seven-day forecast from the National Weather Service.
There was a 70% chance of precipitation, the weather service said, with a 10th to quarter of an inch of new rainfall possible.
More showers were likely Tuesday evening, mostly before 9 p.m. With a 60% chance of precipitation, the Sacramento area could see a quarter-inch to a half of an inch of new precipitation.
The overnight low temperature was expected to drop to 53 degrees, according to the forecast.
When will rain showers stop?
Wednesday is expected to start out cloudy before skies clear mid-morning, the weather service said.
The high will be near 63 and the overnight low will be around 49.
From Thursday to Sunday, the area is expected to have sunny or mostly clear skies.
On Thursday, temperatures could reach a high of 68 and a low around 50.
Friday will have a high near 70 with mostly sunny skies, and an overnight low around 52.
On Saturday, the high will reach 74 degrees while the low will drop to 53, the weather service said.
There’s a slight chance of showers on Sunday, when the high will be near 72 degrees and the low will dip to 51.
Will it snow in Sierra Nevada?
“Moderate” snowfall was expected in the Sierra Nevada Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 15, the weather service said on X, warning of “travel delays and slick roads.”
A winter storm warning was in effect for parts of the Sierra Nevada until 5 a.m. Wednesday, with snow expected to fall at elevations of 5,500 to 6,500 feet.
Higher elevations south of Highway 50 could get 1 to 2 feet of snow, the weather service said on its website, while other areas could see only a few inches of snowfall.
“Snow accumulations may be affected by (daytime) trends and sun angle,” the weather service said.
