Latest storm brings more rain, snow to Sacramento region. Here’s how much fell

The third of three storms that raked across the capital region and California dropped nearly an inch of rain on parts of Sacramento overnight and more than an inch in the Sierra foothills, with fresh snow piling up in higher elevations.

And another weather system is taking aim at Northern California later this week.

In the capital city, Sacramento Executive Airport recorded 0.77 inches of rain in the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service, while Sacramento International Airport saw 0.43 inches.

In Sacramento County, Arcade Creek at Winding Way measured 0.59 inches, while Fair Oaks received 0.67 inches. Herald, southeast of Elk Grove, recorded 0.75 inches. Elk Grove saw a more modest 0.55 inches of rain. Yolo County saw similar precipitation as the storm moved in from the south — UC Davis Airport picked up 0.60 inches while Winters say 0.76 inches of rain.

Foothill communities to the east logged higher totals. Auburn picked up 1.03 inches of rain while Pilot Hill in El Dorado County recorded 0.81 inches. Roseville measured 0.98 inches at its water treatment plant and Olive Ranch in the Placer foothills saw 1.02 inches.

Mountain totals varied, but snow returned to the high country. The Central Sierra Snow Lab near Donner Pass measured 5.1 inches of new snowfall Monday morning, with another 3 to 4 inches expected before the day’s end.

Snow levels ranged from 5,000 to 6,000 feet Monday, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for elevations above 6,000 feet through 4 p.m. Forecasters said gusty winds and snow could make travel hazardous in the Sierra, especially over higher mountain passes.

Chains are expected to remain required on Highway 50 between Twin Bridges and Meyers and on Interstate 80 just west of Kingvale to the Donner Lake interchange, Caltrans said. Highway 89 remains closed between Mono County and Monitor Pass in Alpine County and chains are required to the El Dorado County line.

Another Pacific storm is expected to move into the region late Wednesday into Friday, bringing renewed chances for Valley rain and Sierra snow, though totals remain uncertain.

“Scattered showers will continue to bring periods of light to moderate rain and mountain snow today,” forecasters with the Sacramento office wrote in a briefing Monday. “Briefly drier conditions (return) Tuesday into Wednesday morning, before a new system brings renewed chances for widespread rain and mountain snow.”
