What’s the weather going to be like this weekend for Sacramento? Look for rain, rain and more rain, the National Weather Service said.

Rain is expected through Sunday, Dec. 20, for Sacramento County, the weather service forecast said.

The forecast calls for 0.46 inches of rain in downtown Sacramento on Friday, Dec. 19, 0.93 inches of rain Saturday and 1.96 inches of rain on Sunday. But rainfall could reach up 0.61 inches Friday, 1.28 inches Saturday and 2.66 inches Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to range from the low 50s to the mid- to high-50s over the weekend.

Where’s all the rain coming from?

The City of Trees is being hit by a series of atmospheric river storms, said Sara Purdue, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, atmospheric rivers are streams in the atmosphere that carry water vapors outside of the tropics.

They’re sometimes referred to as “rivers in the sky.”

What’s the Christmas weather forecast?

Showers are expected to continue in the Sacramento area through at least next Wednesday, Dec. 24, the weather service’s seven-day forecast said.

“There may be periods of lighter rain, but it still looks gloomy through Christmas Eve,” Purdue said.

However, all the rain should help clear up the dense fog that hit Sacramento in recent weeks.

How to prepare for the rain

The city of Sacramento is asking residents to help prepare homes and neighborhoods for the series of storms, the city said in a Thursday, Dec. 18, news release.

“Leaves and debris that can clog storm drains could be an issue during this series of storms,” Carlos Eliason, city Department of Utilities spokesperson, said in the release. “Making sure storm drains near you are clear is one of the best ways to help our staff out and prevent street flooding.”

The city advises residents to rake leaves and debris away from storm drains, fill organic bins before creating leaf piles, keep leaf piles away from gutters and secure outdoor furniture and holiday decorations.

Also, the city asks residents to report street flooding or downed limbs to 311.
