At 2:26 p.m. on Saturday, the NWS Phoenix AZ released an extreme heat warning valid for Monday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. The warning is for Imperial Valley, Palo Verde Valley and Chuckwalla Valley.

The NWS informs, "Dangerously hot conditions. Afternoon temperatures of 106 to 112 degrees expected. Major Heat Risk."

"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Overexposure can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion to develop and, without intervention, can lead to heat stroke," explains the NWS.

This warning is in effect until Monday at 8 p.m.

During heat waves, consider the following tips from the NWS

  • Consume plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
  • Check on others: Stay out of the sun, and make sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in hot vehicles - car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Exercise caution outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, take additional safety measures.
  • Time your activities wisely: When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the red flags: Understand the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Stay cool with clothing: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.

To minimize risks during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises incorporating frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone experiences heat-related symptoms, promptly relocate them to a cool and shaded spot. In case of an emergency, dial 911.
