Letters: Sanctuary city status is to blame for Kate Steinle’s death

Re “Don’t blame Kate Steinle’s death on sanctuary cities. Here’s what matters in the trial” (Editorials, Oct. 23): The Sacramento Bee’s editorial board editorial board finds that San Francisco being a sanctuary city is an irrelevant fact in the killing of Kate Steinle. Such a conclusion is only possible by ignoring facts, such as that Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, the accused killer, was released from jail, precisely because he was an illegal immigrant. This career criminal had seven prior felony convictions and an outstanding felony warrant while he was in custody. No such person who was a citizen would ever be released by any law enforcement agency. But because there was also a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer, he was released so ICE couldn’t get him under San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy. The Bee’s editorial board should be able to connect dots.
