Letters: Don’t let churches practice politics

Re “Trump wants to legalize politics in the pulpit. The GOP House is quietly helping” (sacbee.com, July 17): Despite what President Donald Trump says that he is ending the Johnson Amendment, no such thing has occurred. The amendment is still on the books. Executive Order 13798 is a joke, and Trump has absolutely no authority to do what he claims he can. While Trump and his supporters believe religious organizations continuously have their free speech rights oppressed, he and they are dead wrong. Churches are rarely cited for engaging in prohibited political activities. Only one church has ever lost its tax exempt status for prohibited political activities. Repealing the Johnson Amendment is antithetical to constitutional principles, and will only further darken our democracy.
