Juan Esparza Loera, a veteran journalist, is named opinion editor of The Fresno Bee | Opinion
Juan Esparza Loera, a veteran journalist and an inductee of Fresno State’s Media, Communications and Journalism Hall of Fame, will be the new opinion editor at The Fresno Bee.
Beginning Monday, Esparza Loera will be an opinion columnist, editorial writer and editor of Fresno Bee opinion content. He brings a unique perspective on his city and region developed over 34 distinguished years as the founding editor of Vida en el Valle, The Bee’s bilingual publication. Before that, Esparza Loera was a reporter and then an editor at The Modesto Bee for a decade. And he previously covered sports for the Bakersfield Californian. Esparza Loera “got the journalism bug” as a student at Delano High School, pounding out his first stories in the 1970s on a Smith Corona electric typewriter, a gift from his father that Esparza Loera still owns.
“I hope to be a voice for the entire community,” Esparza Loera said. “It’s one community here in Fresno, one community here in the valley. We’re all in this boat together.”
Esparza Loera will work with Fresno Bee columnist Marek Warszawski and be a member of a broader team of opinion journalists working at McClatchy publications in Modesto, San Luis Obispo and Sacramento. Some of his new opinion colleagues have had their bylines published in The Fresno Bee. Robin Epley, Hannah Holzer, Tom Philp and LeBron Antonio Hill are all opinion writers at The Sacramento Bee. Stephanie Finucane is the Opinion Editor at the San Luis Obispo Tribune. Tad Weber, Esparza Loera’s predecessor, also returns to our team on Monday. Weber will work part-time as a writer and editor.
All members of McClatchy’s California opinion team work together on statewide issues, and their views reflect the cultural and ideological diversity of California.
“Juan has deep roots in Fresno and the Central Valley, and his years of journalism experience in the region will provide the foundation for incisive local commentary that our audience in Fresno and beyond can’t find anywhere else,” said Colleen McCain Nelson, McClatchy regional editor for California and executive editor of The Sacramento Bee.
Esparza Loera begins his new role on the eve of the 2024 general election. He will write and edit The Fresno Bee’s endorsement editorials for several key local races.
“His thoughtful voice will be an important part of the conversations our communities are having,” said Peter St. Onge, national opinion editor for McClatchy.
Born in Mexico but raised in the United States, Esparza Loera’s life experience is reflected in a Fresno community that is more than 50% Latino. Along with his induction into Fresno State’s media Hall of Fame, Esparza Loera was honored last year with the Distinguished Mexican Award, given to distinguished people of Mexican descent by the Institute of Mexicans Abroad.
“For a boy who used to help his grandfather pull water from a well in his Valle de Juárez ranch in Chihuahua, then haul that water in a horse-drawn wagon, this is a big honor,” Esparza Loera wrote last year.
We’re honored to have Juan on our team.
“(Juan has) spent a career giving voice to the voiceless and working hard to expose wrongdoing,” said Christopher Kirkpatrick, senior editor of The Fresno Bee. “There are so many issues of importance related to water, worker rights, city and county governance, and more that touch so many different communities and cultures. Juan understands this better than anyone.”
