Healthier future needed now

Update: Hughes Fire in Los Angeles County still uncontained and keeps growing,” (sacbee.com, Jan. 22)

As a physician, I understand the impact of wildfire smoke on our bodies, especially the young, elderly and those with underlying medical conditions. The Los Angeles fires arrived after 2024, the hottest year on record.

Fossil fuels are the primary driver of climate change. We can no longer let the oil lobby put California’s future at risk by delaying the transition to clean, renewable energy. We are counting on our state leaders to write a safer, better, healthier future for Californians.

Our health depends on it.

Resist Trump’s bullying

I felt numb when Donald Trump was re-elected, but not anymore. It’s time to resist | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, Jan. 23)

It is time to resist, not resign. The power is with the people, and it is a choice.

Every time we treat someone with respect rather than as a transaction, we resist. Every time we choose to live more sustainably, we resist. Together, we can stand up to bullying behavior. There is no need to fear when we are united. We resist.

Shocked by Trump’s decision

White House suspends federal aid disbursements,” (sacbee.com, Jan. 28)

In my almost four decades working in mental health systems, I have never seen a president pause funding for services to children, pregnant mothers, families and veterans. I guess providing mental health and substance use treatment to vulnerable populations doesn’t comply with his agenda and priorities.

Unapologetic hypocrisy

Snoop Dogg was the soundtrack of my childhood. Trump won’t make me stop listening to him | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, Jan. 22)

On at least two public occasions, Snoop was extremely critical of artists who performed for Trump, and was very opinionated about Trump being a racist and Trump’s followers being racist. So for Snoop to then perform at a Trump Inauguration-sponsored event is, to me, a massive contradiction at best and blatant hypocrisy with impunity at worst.

We will forgive, but we won’t forget his act of unapologetic hypocrisy.

Stealing is wrong

What formula allegedly stolen from Target says about society,” (sacbee.com, Jan. 28)

Stealing, regardless of reason, is wrong. If the need for welfare support is at issue, there are more constructive and legal avenues for assistance than committing theft.

Cowardice

Republicans embrace Hegseth as Democrats question his fitness to lead Pentagon,” (sacbee.com, Jan. 14)

The 49 senators who voted to confirm an absolutely unqualified nominee are profiles in cowardice.
