Is Rep. Kevin Kiley effectively out of a job in California? I hope so | Opinion

California must wholeheartedly reject Kiley

Kevin Kiley says he’s running for re-election. He’s not sure where” (sacbee.com, Nov. 5)

In the end, it doesn’t matter which district Rep. Kevin Kiley considers worthy of his candidacy. No amount of carefully worded interviews, performative media appearances, aggrieved social media posts, or false veneer of moderation will change his voting record.

Kiley has been a loyal Trump lieutenant in the California congressional delegation, supporting every cruel and corrupt act of this administration. There will be no forgetting his votes to cut Medicaid and premium subsidies to give tax breaks to the wealthy, his sponsorship of the SAVE Act to restrict voting rights, nor his silence on the Epstein files.

Wherever Kiley lands, removing him and his ilk from Congress is imperative.

Combat U helped me

Sac State football is in limbo, and the president’s antics go unchecked | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, Oct. 28)

I am a proud Sacramento State Hornet and vice president of the Combat U Wrestling Team. Through Combat U, I’ve experienced how athletics empower students to grow as competitors and community leaders. This program has provided me with both a supportive space and financial aid toward my education.

At Sacramento State, I’ve been able to witness how student life thrives beyond sports .Strong leadership has brought a renewed sense of belonging, empowering students through the university’s positive direction and transformation in the state capital.

Defense of “American Prays”

The Trump administration’s call for a religious revival is worrying | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, Oct. 31)

The Founding Fathers weren’t shy about bringing their religious beliefs into leadership, yet they avoided a national religion — unlike state churches that dominated Europe.

The First Amendment prohibits Congress from creating an official religion, but it protects the free exercise of faith. Voluntary expressions of belief reflect our nation’s traditions and strengthen American values.

“America Prays” invites everyone to a voluntary spiritual renewal, which, in turn, bolsters public policy by building unity from the ground up.

New bill would fix rollbacks

California YIMBY holds victory party in San Francisco,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 2)

Housing is a critical issue in California, but the California Environmental Quality Act rollbacks signed into law this past summer will surely do much more harm than good. The language is vague and will not protect new communities from toxic industries, air pollution, transportation of hazardous materials and loss of so much that makes California a healthy place to live.

While good intentions were evident, the loopholes are big and broad. Fortunately, Assembly Bill 1083, authored by Assemblymember Damon Connolly, D-San Rafael, will address much of this ambiguity while ensuring that needed housing will be safe and that new communities will be protected.

Assault of president

Mexico’s president was groped on the street. Now she’s waging a war against rampant sexual harassment,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 5)

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was groped by a man, who then attempted to kiss her. He deserves to be arrested for what he did.
