Trump must be impeached
“Donald Trump Downplays ‘Death’ Remarks About ‘Seditious’ Democrats,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 21)
Congress must stand up for democracy and the rule of law by condemning and/or impeaching President Donald Trump.
Recent events once again illustrate Trump’s abject lack of fitness for office. He called on members of Congress to be executed for the crime of publicly stating a law that he finds inconvenient; he welcomed the Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia with lavish ceremony, sharing contempt for journalists and outrageous excuses for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi; and he demanded that a “peace treaty“ be signed by Ukraine that is nothing more than Russian President Vladimir Putin’s wishlist.

Time for Trump to go
“Judge halts Trump administration cuts to disaster aid for ‘sanctuary’ states,” (sacbee.com, Sept. 30)
President Donald Trump is withholding disaster aid from blue states. When did we become residents of blue states instead of just American citizens?
To preserve our democracy, it’s time for Trump to go!

SCUSD’s financial woes
“Teachers’ raises push SCUSD closer to insolvency this year,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 17)
This article reminds me of a quote from former Yankee great Yogi Berra: When it comes to fiscal irresponsibility at the Sacramento City Unified School District, “It’s deja vu all over again.”
Just six years ago, the district was on the brink of being taken over by the state because it could not get its fiscal house in order. Apparently, no lessons were learned. The board voted to approve two years’ worth of raises in teacher salaries, which will amount to around $19 million. The board did so just days before revealing how deep in the hole the district is.
With 94% of discretionary funds spent on salaries and benefits, there isn’t a great deal of wiggle room to spend on anything else.

Road safety
“Fatal car crashes unite families at Sacramento rally. ‘They are violent deaths’,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 18)
Thousands of families are devastated each year when a loved one is killed as a result of being struck by a vehicle.
For decades, I taught blind students to walk safely across and beside streets. While teaching and doing related research, I often saw people take risks walking on streets: running across streets outside crosswalks; using distracting electronic devices; darting into the street between vehicles; and riding bicycles carelessly.
Pedestrians and cyclists must be aware of their surroundings at all times and take precautions. At the same time, drivers need to drive safely while not speeding or driving distracted.
