America’s highways are bracing for record-breaking traffic this Fourth Of July weekend. Between June 27 and July 5, an estimated 7.1 million Californians are expected to travel by car, navigating busy highways during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

With more drivers on the road during a holiday known for celebration, AAA is drawing attention to the significant safety concern of impaired driving.

Impaired Driving Remains a Serious Fourth of July Risk

Summer brings particular challenges to road safety. The season coincides with more vacation travel, increased teen driving as school lets out, and holiday celebrations that can easily lead to impaired driving if motorists fail to plan ahead.

Holiday Celebrations Should Always End With a Safe Ride Home

Research shows nearly one-third of all impaired-driving traffic fatalities occur during the summer months. From 2019 to 2023, there were 2,653 traffic fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period. More than 1,600 of those fatalities were drivers, and approximately 38% of those drivers were under the influence. The data also shows a clear age pattern. Drivers ages 21-34 represented the highest percentage (48%) of impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes during this period.

“Major holiday celebrations like the Fourth of July can further contribute to the risk as backyard gatherings, fireworks displays, and community events take place across the country,” said Doug Johnson, spokesperson for AAA Mountain West Group. “Impaired driving is 100% preventable, and choosing a safe ride home is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and others.”

The Safest Ride Home Is the One You Plan Ahead

AAA emphasizes that avoiding impairment is a driver obligation that saves lives every single day. Ensuring a safe way home exemplifies a life-saving habit that protects our community.

AAA encourages California drivers to commit to safer driving behaviors this Fourth of July, including:

  • Making a plan. Alcohol, illegal and some prescription substances seriously impair someone’s ability to drive. Drowsy driving is nearly as dangerous as driving under the influence. Always plan ahead and drive responsibly.
  • Limiting distractions. Put away cellphones, keep your eyes on the road, limit the number of passengers in your vehicle.
  • Obey posted speed limits. Speeding is a leading factor in fatal crashes during the summer.
  • Wear Your Seatbelt. Ensure you and your passengers are fastened before driving.

Protect Everyone on the Road

Responsibility doesn’t mean missing out on holiday plans but rather requiring that drivers make the safe choice to secure a ride home before celebrations begin. Making that decision beforehand removes the temptation to drive when conditions aren’t safe.

This Fourth of July, as Californians gather with family and friends, AAA encourages drivers to not get behind the wheel when they’re impaired.
