Kings: Slow start, foul trouble costly in loss

Starting a game slowly is a bad way to wear down an opponent, and that was the Kings’ dilemma Monday night in their loss to the Atlanta Hawks. To make things worse, the Kings’ top two scorers, DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay, each had five fouls through three quarters.

Hometown report: Veteran coach Hoskins still old-school in high-tech age

Dave Hoskins is in his 50th year of coaching football in the Sacramento area, having come full circle to Christian Brothers High School with stops at Valley, Elk Grove and community colleges. While the game has changed in a high-tech world, the old-school coach says hard work and desire will never go out of style.

Prep football: League titles, playoff hopes on line this week

The regular season comes down to the final week with several championships still up for grabs. The Sierra Foothill League will be decided when No. 2 Folsom faces No. 3 Oak Ridge, the Delta League will come down to No. 5 Sheldon vs. No. 4 Elk Grove, and the Capital Athletic League race is between No. 11 Vista del Lago and No. 12 Christian Brothers.

Raiders: Coach stands by his heavily penalized team

Coach Jack Del Rio insists his team is disciplined even though the Raiders committed an NFL-record 23 penalties, for 200 yards in their overtime win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. Oakland leads the NFL with 86 penalties this season.

World Series: Cubs’ Schwarber will DH in Cleveland

Now that it’s back to Cleveland for Game 6 on Tuesday night, the Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber will be back in the lineup as a designated hitter with Chicago trailing 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.
