Hot shooting and a freshman’s career night led the UC Davis women’s basketball team to victory Tuesday in Fullerton, according to the school’s website.
Guard Rachel Nagel, starting for only the second time, scored 20 points to lead the No. 5-seed Aggies to a 80-71 victory over UC Irvine in the opening round of the Big West Conference tournament. Nagel, who entered the game averaging 6.4 points this season, was 8 of 15 from the floor, including 4 of 8 from three-point range.
UC Davis (14-15), which played without leading scorer Sydnee Fipps for the second consecutive game, snapped a five-game skid and will face No. 4 Long Beach State (22-8) today at Cal State Fullerton.
The Anteaters, led by Shereen Sutherland’s 21 points, finish with an 8-24 record.
