Sports Night: River Cats look good

River Cats: Looking good

The River Cats opened their 16th season in Sacramento with a new look. The black and orange of a new parent club – the World Series champion Giants – replaced the green and gold of the A’s. Most fans seemed to like it. “Doesn’t this look so pretty? What a beautiful marriage this will be,” said 64-year-old grandmother Mary Wilson, who was one of an announced crowd of 14,014. Adding to the fun was the River Cats pulling out a 1-0 victory over Salt Lake in the ninth inning. http://www.sacbee.com/sports/other-sports/river-cats/

A’s: Bats run hot and cold

Oakland manager Bob Melvin admited he isn’t sure what to make of his team’s up-and-down production at the plate this season. The A’s didn’t have much hitting – or pitching for that matter – in a 10-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. “We’ve been feast or famine,” summed up closer Tyler Clippard. http://www.sacbee.com/sports/mlb/oakland-as/article17996516.html

Giants: Feuding with the Padres

The Padres will never replace the Dodgers as the Giants’ nemesis. That didn’t lessen the intensity in San Francisco’s 12-inning, 1-0 victory over San Diego. http://www.sacbee.com/sports/mlb/san-francisco-giants/

Kings: McCallum has his hands full

Point guard Ray McCallum knows he had a bad game in Wednesday’s loss to the Utah Jazz. “I’ll watch the film, learn from it and just get prepared for (tonight’s game),” he says. Up next is counterpart Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder (today at 5 p.m., CSNCA). http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-blog/article18012872.html

Ailene Voisin: Republic FC seeks promotion

Coach Preki knows he has it good after guiding Republic FC to a championship in the team’s first season. Next, he would like to lead the team to something much bigger – a franchise in the MLS. “This is a great sports city. The support for the teams here is amazing,” he says. “When I went to Kings game the other night, it was almost full arena for a team that has nothing. I mean, you go to another country, go to Serbia like that, there will be three people in the arena and they’ll be throwing eggs at you.” http://www.sacbee.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/ailene-voisin/article18006872.html
