Regional Digest: Yuba College ends playoff drought Tuesday

Three area teams qualified for the California community college baseball playoffs that start Tuesday.

Yuba (21-15), in the playoffs for the first time in 23 years, hosts College of the Sequoias (19-17) at 2 p.m. in a play-in game.

In a best-of-three series that start Friday, Cosumnes River (23-13) visits Gavilan (23-12), and Folsom Lake (22-14), in its first year, plays at Feather River (28-8).

National No. 1 Delta (33-3) of Stockton, led by ace Cameron Leeper (12-0) out of Grant High School, is the top Northern California seed.

In softball, defending state champion Sierra (31-9) earned the No. 1 NorCal seed and will host Napa Valley (26-14) in a best-of-three series starting Saturday.

Big 8 Conference champion Cosumnes River (26-11-1) hosts Fresno City (19-20), Sacramento City (24-14) hosts Shasta (23-14), and American River (20-17) visits College of San Mateo (35-0).

UC Davis men leadBig West Conference golf

▪ Luke Vivolo shot a 1-under-par 69 and Matt Seramin a 70, and UC Davis jumped into the lead by two shots Monday after two rounds of the Big West Conference men’s golf championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club, UCD reported. UC Irvine and UC Riverside are tied for second. The final round is today.

▪ The UC Davis women’s team was selected as the fifth seed in the NCAA South Bend Regional on May 7-9, UCD reported. The six-time defending Big West champs will attempt to earn their fourth trip to the national finals.

▪ Sacramento State’s Riley Hayfield shot a par 72 and is tied for the individual lead following the first round of the Big Sky Conference men’s golf championship at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp, Sac State reported. The Hornets are second, two strokes behind Idaho.
