Albuquerque tops River Cats in 17 innings

Brandon Barnes hit a solo home run in the 17th inning to give the Albuquerque Isotopes a 5-4 victory over the River Cats on Sunday at Raley Field.

Sacramento’s Ben Turner tied the score 4-4 with a one-out RBI single in the ninth. After Ehire Adrianza walked, Turner was thrown out trying to score on Carlos Triunfe’s single.

Triunfel, a third baseman, was ejected in the bottom of the 14th after a hard-hit ball off the bat of teammate Ronny Cedeno was ruled foul, the River Cats reported.

That left Sacramento a position player short, so manager Bob Mariano sent in pitcher Ty Blach to play left field and moved outfielder Juan Perez to third base.

Black and Jarrett Parker alternated between left and right field depending on the batter’s side of the plate. The strategy worked as Blach did not see any action.

Tim Smalling homered twice for Albuquerque.
