Hogs beat Dogs in 46th Pig Bowl in longest such charity event in the country
The Pig Bowl lives on.
On Saturday at Sacramento State, Shawn Vasquez rushed for 60 yards in the fourth quarter to salt away a 14-11 victory for the Sacramento-area law enforcement “Hogs” over the firefighter “Dogs” in the 46th Pig Bowl in front of an estimated crowd of 8,000.
The game started in 1974 and was once the highest-drawing event in the area. It often filled 22,000-seat Hughes Stadium on the Sacramento City College campus. It is the longest-running charity football game of its kind in the United States.
The event was renamed Guns and Hoses in 2003 to reflect the format change to police vs. firefighters. The law won for the 13th time in this format.
Law quarterback Jade Sloan passed for 132 yards and hit Will Fausel for a 36-yard touchdown in the second quarter for a 14-3 lead.
Fire quarterback Ricky Rodarte passed for 80 yards and ran for 22, and his 36-yard scoring strike to Josh Thoming pulled his team to within 14-11.
Honored with Pig Bowl Hall of Fame honors at the half: Ron Bozworth, Frankie Collins, Ernie Daniels, Scotty Scott, Rob Swonger and Jose Whitfield.
