Report: Sacramento Kings, Philadelphia 76ers eye Alvin Gentry for assistant coaching jobs

The Kings are reportedly considering former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry for a top job on Luke Walton’s coaching staff.

A source told The Philadelphia Enquirer’s Keith Pompey the Philadelphia 76ers are seriously considering hiring Gentry as an assistant to new head coach Doc Rivers. The same source revealed Gentry is also in the running to become associate head coach of the Kings.

The Kings are seeking a replacement for Igor Kokoskov, who left the team after one season to become head coach of Fenerbahce Basketball in Istanbul, Turkey. Kokoskov joined the Kings after the Phoenix Suns fired him following the 2018-19 season.

Gentry, 65, coached the Pelicans for five seasons. He was fired in August following a disappointing performance in the NBA bubble. He previously served as head coach of the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Suns. He also held assistant coaching positions with the San Antonio Spurs, Clippers, Heat, Pistons, New Orleans Hornets and Golden State Warriors.

Gentry’s name is the first to surface in connection with the coaching vacancy in Sacramento, where the Kings are restructuring basketball operations under new general manager Monte McNair.
