Sports Night: Rondo next up for Kings in free-agent roulette

Kings: Trade is one of risk/reward

It’s always good to have a little extra money – if you don’t waste it. The Kings, who had designs on free-agent guards Rajon Rondo and Wesley Matthews, have $26 million to spend after their salary dump trade with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Matthews reportedly opted for an offer from the Dallas Mavericks late Thursday.

Giants: Cain is adequate in season debut

Matt Cain, sidelined since last July by an elbow injury that required surgery, wasn’t great in his season debut for the Giants. He wasn’t horrible, either, allowing five runs in five innings in the Giants’ 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins. Manager Bruce Bochy’s assessment: “He had a good delivery, stayed within it. He looked comfortable, and that’s why I’m encouraged. It was free and easy.”

A’s: Mariners can’t touch Kazmir

Scott Kazmir pitches eight sparkling innings, Marcus Semien homers for the first time in nearly two months and the A’s defeat the Seattle Mariners 4-0. Kazmir, whose name keeps coming up in trade speculations, retires 21 of his first 22 batters, strikes out seven and improves to 5-0 in seven starts against the American League West this season.

River Cats: Williamson hammers Bees

Mac Williamson goes 4 for 4 as the River Cats rout the Salt Lake Bees 10-3 at Raley Field for their fourth straight victory. Williamson reaches base five times, drives in three runs and scores three. He hits a two-run homer, a double and two singles and walks once.
