College football: No. 5 Sacramento State beats Cal Poly for first 4-0 start since 1982
The momentum rolls on for Sacramento State.
The FCS No. 5 Hornets piled up 564 yards and extended their regular-season winning streak to 12 with a 49-21 victory over Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Saturday night in a Big Sky Conference opener.
The two-time defending Big Sky champions led 21-0 after the first quarter, opened the second half with a touchdown and are 4-0 for the first time since 1982 in moving to 17-1 in conference play since 2019.
Sacramento State received 337 yards combined passing and three touchdowns from a 1-2 quarterback punch, and Cameron Skattebo capped the scoring with a 35-yard highlight touchdown romp in which the sophomore from Rio Linda emphatically bounced off one defender and then stiff-armed another at the goal line.
Skattebo rushed 10 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns; he also caught one from Jake Dunniway, who passed for 246 yards on 16 of 22 passing and two touchdowns. Asher O’Hara was 6 of 10 passing for 91 yards and a 40-yard-touchdown strike to Jared Gipson.
Sacramento State was not always sharp as it committed a season-high 12 penalties for 104 yards, but the Hornets did not turn the ball over and have not trailed at any point this season.
“We have to get rid of those penalties,” O’Hara said after the game through Sacramento State media relations. “I thought we played well. We won, and that’s what matters.”
Sacramento State is 11-0 on the road against FCS competition since coach Troy Taylor and his staff took over before the 2019 season.
“We came out pretty fast on offense and defense,” Taylor said. “It’s always good to play with the lead. We’re running our stuff. We’ve got great players, and great players tend to create big plays.”
The Hornets return home Oct. 8 after a three-game road stint to play Northern Colorado.
