Women’s pro bowlers in Sacramento this weekend

A field of 80 bowlers will compete for a top prize of $12,000 in the PWBA Storm Sacramento Open on Friday and Saturday at Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes in Citrus Heights.

The Professional Women’s Bowling Association was formed in 1960 but ceased operations in 2003. It was re-launched this year with the USBC Queens in Green Bay, Wis., in May. The Sacramento Open kicks off 10 weeks of events across the country.

The field includes veteran bowlers Leanne Hulsenberg of Roseville, who has won 26 PWBA titles and twice was PWBA Player of the Year, and Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, the first woman to join the Professional Bowlers Association.

Bowlers will compete in 12 games of qualifying Friday, with the top 16 advancing to round-robin match play Saturday. The stepladder finals begin Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Fireside Lanes is at 7901 Auburn Blvd. There is no charge to attend.
