Sacramento Republic FC is bringing back another one of its most important players for 2023.

The club announced Tuesday midfielder Luis Felipe will be back on a multi-year contract after leading the team in tackles, duels and interceptions over the last two campaigns.

“Luis Felipe has become an integral part of our club these past two seasons and has been an absolute workhorse in our midfield,” Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant wrote in a statement. “Luis’ tenacity is contagious, and he showed time and again that he shines brightest when the stakes are highest. We are delighted to bring him back to represent our badge.”

The 26-year-old scored three consecutive decisive goals in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup while being among the team’s leaders in overall appearances since joining the club in 2021, when he was named the the team’s MVP and defensive MVP.

The Republic also announced recently the addition of defender Jared Timmer, a 25-year-old who spent the last two seasons playing with the Indy Eleven in the USL’s Eastern Conference. Timmer made 54 starts in 64 appearances, logging nearly 5,000 minutes while leading the club with a 65% success rate in duels.

The news is another positive development for Republic FC during the offseason after reaching the USL playoffs for the eighth time in its nine-year existence and going to the finals in the U.S. Open Cup in 2022. The club is expected to return some 90% of its players from last season’s team, which finished fourth in the USL’s Western Conference and made it to the second round of the playoffs in October.

The team earlier this month announced an agreement to bring back popular manager Mark Briggs and add goal scorer Russell Cicerone in free agency. The club also retained co-captains Rodrigo Lopez and Lee Desmond along with Sacramento native Matt LaGrassa, among others.
