Sacramento Republic FC announces 34-game USL Championship division schedule for 2023
Sacramento Republic FC on Monday announced its schedule for the 2023 season in the USL Championship division.
Coming off their run to the U.S. Cup Final in September and their fourth USL playoff appearance in the last five seasons, Republic FC begins the year March 11 with a road game against El Paso Locomotive before their home opener at Heart Health Park March 18 against the Charleston Battery.
The team will play 34 regular-season games through mid-October in line with the USL’s new format featuring 24 teams with 12 in the Eastern and Western conferences. Teams will play their conference opponents twice — once at home and once on the road — and the remaining 12 games will be played against teams from the other conference. Those games will be split with six home contests and six away.
Those games do not include the U.S. Open Cup, which is a separate tournament consisting of professional teams in multiple leagues, including the MLS. Republic FC last year advanced to the final against Orlando City, becoming the first non-MLS team since 2008 to play for the trophy. The club beat three MLS squads — San Jose Earthquakes, LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City — to reach the final.
The top eight USL regular-season teams in each conference will advance to the single-elimination, fixed bracket format with the 2023 USL Championship Final to be played between Nov. 9 and Nov. 13. San Antonio FC won last season’s championship, beating Louisville City FC 3-1.
The USL has three levels — Championship, League One and League Two — and is working towards a promotion-relegation model that’s common among leagues in Europe, including the English Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A.
Every game will be shown on Fox 40’s digital station — Antenna TV 40.2 — and streaming on Fox40.com. Select games will air on Fox 40. Those broadcasts have yet to be determined.
