Saturday’s game for Sacramento Republic FC was expected to provide a good litmus test early in the season — a test the home team passed to move into a tie for first place three games into the 2023 campaign.

Republic FC beat previously unbeaten San Diego Loyal SC 1-0 at Heart Health Park to move into the top spot in the USL Championship’s Western Conference with seven points and a record of 2-0-1.

The game’s lone goal came on a header from midfielder Luis Felipe off a pass from Rodrigo Lopez in the 40th minute. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Danny Vitiello and Sacrament’s stout defensive backfield authored his second clean sheet in three games.

The Republic created multiple scoring opportunities.

Russell Cicerone continued his hot start with his new club, nearly scoring with roughly 20 minutes to go. Venezuelan national Arnold Lopez missed a rebound attempt with a high shot from the top of the penalty box. Elk Grove native Matt LaGrassa also had a shot on goal that was saved by San Diego’s keeper.

Sacramento will host its third straight home game on Saturday April 1 against Louisville City FC (2-1), which is in second place in the Eastern Conference.
