Sacramento Republic manager Mark Briggs named USL Coach of the Month after unbeaten April
Sacramento Republic FC manager Mark Briggs on Wednesday was named the USL’s Coach of the Month for April while his club went unbeaten and sits atop the standings in the Western Conference.
“Truly honored and humbled to be named Coach of the Month, but all the credit and praise should go to my staff and players for the performances they have produced against top teams,” Briggs said in a written statement. “I’d also like to thank the fans and supporters of this club. They’ve been an incredible motivating force, and we’ll need them more than ever to continue making progress this season.”
Republic FC went 3-0-2 in April and remains the USL’s only unbeaten team in league play. The wins included a 5-0 romp over defending Eastern Conference champs Louisville City followed by three additional clean sheets. The team went five straight games without allowing a goal, a span of 594 game minutes.
“Mark has worked tirelessly to build a winning culture in Sacramento, and the team’s performance in April is a testament to that,” Republic FC general manager Todd Dunivant said. “This is a well-deserved honor for Mark that also extends to the entire technical staff, as we continue our quest for silverware.”
Republic FC has designs on winning a league title this year after losing to the Colorado Rapids in the U.S. Open Cup round of 32 on Tuesday. Sacramento’s plus-12 goal differential is No. 1 among the 24 USL sides, with Charleston Battery coming in second at plus-six. The Republic will hope to rebound from Tuesday’s Open Cup loss Saturday night when they host Indy Eleven, which has won just one of its last five games.
April marks the second time Briggs has been named Coach of the Month. He first received the honor in June of last season when the team went 5-0-0. He was named Coach of the Year in 2017 while leading Real Monarchs SLC to the regular-season championship.
