Get your brackets ready: Previewing Selection Sunday
NCAA teams are waiting to hear if their efforts in conference tournaments secured them a spot in the tournament, while others are waiting to hear which seed they landed. This year, nothing seems guaranteed. Here are a few stats to understand the madness we’ve seen in men’s basketball:
- 10 teams have rotated in and out of the Top 5 spots in the AP’s Top 25 ranking
- Five different teams have been ranked No. 1
- The longest any one of those teams has held the No. 1 ranking is six weeks (UConn)
- The top 5 teams have been upset 27 times this season, with 17 of them coming against unranked teams
There are currently 34 teams locked into the tournament, and 21 coming from conferences who only have one bid. But, then there are 22 teams vying for the remaining 12 spots. Here’s a look at the bubble winners and losers heading into Sunday. And here are some dark horses, too.
And if you want to take a look at the latest Top 25 poll, here it is.
Things are a little more settled on the women’s side of things, at least in the top spot. South Carolina has held the No. 1 seed for 18 weeks and has remained undefeated all season long. But, really everyone is watching for another matchup between South Carolina and LSU, which got sticky the last time.
And of course, all eyes will be on how Iowa’s Caitlin Clark performs after setting the NCAA’s all-time scoring record for a single season.
Here’s the women’s latest top 25 ranking.
Here’s how to tune into Selection Sunday for the men, and for the women. Stay tuned to The Scoreboard for all of the headlines and bracketology fun on Monday.
Other Top Stories:
- The Dallas Cowboys are continuing their bizarre free agency behavior, with the release of veteran wide receiver Michael Gallup and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. They also let go of running back Tony Pollard, and were noticeably absent as other key running backs signed elsewhere. Here’s what we know about the rest of the league after the first wave in the free agency period.
- Also in the NFL, Los Angeles Rams stellar defensive tackle Aaron Donald announced his retirement. The announcement brings an end to Donald’s 10-year NFL career that included three years as the Defensive Player of the Year.
- Basketball isn’t the only sport with a busy schedule, as the NCAA wrestling championship is next weekend. Of note, Penn State wrestling is looking to make NCAA history with all 10 wrestlers seeded among the top 10 in their weight class. The championships take place March 21-23 in Kansas City.
