These A’s players made the All-Star team, as did Rocklin’s Webb for the Giants

Local players made good in the selections for the All-Star teams on Sunday. The game is Tuesday, July 15.

Rooker, Wilson are All-Stars

A’s team leader Brent Rooker on Sunday was named to the American League All-Star team, finishing second in player balloting at designated hitter.

A’s shortstop Jacob Wilson was elected by fans through online voting to be the starter. This marks the first time the A’s have had two All-Star picks since 2021 and just the second time in the last 33 years that the franchise had two or more non-pitcher All-Stars. Rooker is the A’s first two-time All-Star since Stephen Vogt in 2015 and 2016.

Rooker entered Sunday tied as the American League leader with hits as a designated hitter (79), and he was second in home runs (14), doubles (15), walks (32) and runs (40).

Rooker said that unlike his first selection to the All-Star game in 2023, he feels that he belongs this time, adding, calling this honor “humbling and exciting.” He added, “When I was there in ‘23, the reality of who I was at the time, I didn’t think there was a chance I was ever going to get to go back. I thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. To be able to go back a second time is pretty cool.

Rooker said he would be delighted to be in the All-Star Home Run Derby, if asked, reminding that he fared well in the College World Series home-run derby when he starred at Mississippi State. He joked that he would enjoy using an aluminum bat, like in college, but that it could pose as a threat to kids kids in the outfield with balls flying all over the place.

For the Giants, Webb named again

Logan Webb was named to his second consecutive All-Star game on Sunday. The one-time Rocklin High School multi-sport star found out while on a Granite Bay golf course with his father, Eric, and brother, Jacob. Giants manager Bob Melvin called with the news.

Webb is one of three Giants pitchers who will be in the 95th All-Star game on July 15 in Atlanta, joining starter Robbie Ray and reliever Randy Rodriguez, who has the best ERA for relievers in Major League Baseball at 0.71. The 28-year-old Webb leads the Major League Baseball with innings pitched at 120 1/3, and his 133 strikeouts are the second most in the National League entering Sunday

“That was pretty cool,” Webb said of the golf course call. Webb said he hugged his father and brother, then called his mother, Christie, and then his wife, Sharidan, calling that phone call thrill “awesome” and that “it’s always an honor to be an All-Star.”
