If Sacramento lands an MLB expansion team, what would you name it? Tell us here
Discussions to bring a Major League Baseball expansion franchise to Sacramento have officially begun after city leaders started a campaign seeking a team in California’s capital region.
We’d like you to name it! But first, let’s warm you up in the historical on-deck circle.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero have put Sacramento’s name in the hat for the potential MLB expansion that would increase the total number of teams in the league from 30 to 32. With the Athletics playing at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento during their temporary stay here before a planned move to Las Vegas in 2028, city leaders expressed that now is the best opportunity to showcase to the MLB that Sacramento is ready for a permanent club.
“We really (have a) chance to keep baseball here forever in Sacramento,” McCarty said at his State of the City address on Monday. “We are an MLB ready city.”
Currently, the city’s minor league team is the Sacramento River Cats, which formed in 2000.
Recently, they opted for an alternate name: the Gold Diggers, which was intended to be an ode to gold being first discovered in the Sacramento region. However, the team announced it would get rid of the campaign following a promotional video that depicted a young woman, with dollar signs for eyes, spending time with an older man.
But baseball in Sacramento dates back to the late 1800s in various leagues and forms. Previous names Sacramento teams have taken include the:
- Sacramento Union (1885)
- Sacramento Atlas (1887)
- Sacramento Gilt Edges (1894, 1898-1900)
- Sacramento Sacts (1909-1913)
- Sacramento Cordovas (1906-07)
- Sacramento Wolves (1914)
- Sacramento Senators (1890-91, 1893, 1901, 1903, 1908, 1918-35)
- Sacramento Solons (1936-60, 1974-76)
