Jets' Aaron Glenn Makes Surprising Geno Smith Announcement Amid Ty Simpson Rumors

The New York Jets entered 2025 with cautious optimism. By the end of it, they were staring at another reset.

In his first season as head coach, Aaron Glenn inherited a roster that had already cycled through multiple quarterbacks, from Aaron Rodgers to Justin Fields.

The result? A brutal 3–14 campaign that fell well short of even modest preseason expectations and extended the franchise's playoff drought to 15 years.

It wasn't just the losing that stung. It was the instability, the lack of identity, and a roster still searching for direction that raised the biggest concerns.

Now, just weeks into the 2026 offseason, Glenn has ignited the next phase of that rebuild with a statement that's turning heads across the league.

Appearing in a sit-down interview on NFL Network on Sunday, Glenn flat-out named Geno Smith as the Jets' starting quarterback for 2026.

When first asked about Smith's return and what it means for the organization, Glenn struck a confident, almost emphatic tone.

"It means to have a bona fide starter come in and lead this offense to where it needs to go," Glenn said. "There's no doubt in my mind that we brought a competent starter here to this team. I look forward to him getting in the building."

That alone raised eyebrows. But the interviewer didn't stop there.

Trying to clarify whether Glenn was speaking in general terms or making an actual depth chart declaration, she followed up: "So just to be clear, you're saying Geno Smith is the starting quarterback?"

Glenn didn't hesitate.

"No doubt about it. He's our guy."

Smith's return to New York is already one of the more intriguing storylines of the offseason.

The former second-round pick, who began his career with the Jets back in 2013, was reacquired in a low-risk trade from the Las Vegas Raiders on March 11.

Now 35, Smith brings experience, leadership, and a résumé that includes a Comeback Player of the Year award and Pro Bowl nods during his resurgence in Seattle.

However, this wasn't supposed to be a long-term solution. It was supposed to be a bridge.

Instead, Glenn is framing it as something closer to a foundation.

That's where the tension builds.

Because behind the scenes, the Jets have been heavily linked to Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, one of the top prospects in the upcoming 2026 NFL draft.

Reports indicate the team has already conducted private workouts and extensive evaluations of Simpson, signaling real interest in drafting their quarterback of the future.

The Jets currently own the No. 16 overall pick, right around where Simpson is projected to land.

That's the contradiction.

A team doing its homework on a first-round quarterback… while its head coach publicly locks in a veteran starter months in advance.

In today's NFL, that's unusual.

Most teams protect flexibility, especially at quarterback.

Glenn just did the opposite.
