Mira Costa, Redondo are top two seeds in Division 1 boys volleyball playoffs
There is a big change to the format for Division 1 of the CIF Southern Section boys volleyball playoffs this year.
Instead of an eight-team, pool-play format, there are 12 teams playing a single-elimination bracket. The top four seeds have byes in Wednesday's first round.
Mira Costa (30-2), the defending CIF-SS champion, is the top seed in Division 1. The Mustangs' Bay League rival, Redondo Union (26-3), is the second seed. The teams split their two league matches this season and shared the league title.
The Sea Hawks moved up from No. 5 to No. 2 in the final CIF-SS rankings. Loyola is the third seed and Huntington Beach is No. 4.
"There are things I like and dislike about both formats," Mira Costa coach Greg Snyder said. "But I think either way, most likely, the team that gets through it all deserves to win, unless there's bizarre calls or something like that, that really affects the outcome.
"I think whatever format, the best teams are going to be fighting in the finals and will probably earn their way there like they should."
Mira Costa will host Tesoro or Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals May 5, and Redondo will host San Marcos or Santa Margarita.
"I think there's five or six teams (that could win the title). On any night, any team can beat each other," Snyder said. "They (Redondo) beat us, we were lucky to escape Loyola, CdM (Corona del Mar) beat us, Huntington been close …All those teams were capable of beating us, anyone else and we're in that too."
Redondo lost to Loyola in five sets earlier this season and defeated the Cubs in three sets in the Varsity Classic Tournament final.
The Division 1 semifinals are May 9 and the final is May 15 or 16.
Division 3
Palos Verdes (23-10) is the No. 1 seed in Division 3. The Sea Kings finished the regular season as the Pioneer League runners-up. They will host Corona Centennial Corona the first round Wednesday.
Pioneer League champion North Torrance (18-11) will be on the road against Crescenta Valley, the third-place team from the Pacific League. Wiseburn Da Vinci (24-9-1) will be on the road against Servite.
Also, Del Rey League champion Bishop Montgomery (19-4) will host South Torrance (15-12). The teams met in the first match of the season on Feb. 18, with the Spartans winning in five sets.
Division 8
Mary Star (15-9) visits Coastal League champion CAMS (17-11) in the first round Tuesday. Hawthorne MSA (14-16-3) will be on the road against Providence of Burbank.
Division 9
Inglewood (8-9) opens the playoffs Thursday at Webb. Pacific Lutheran (7-4) will be on the road against Bethel Baptist.
