Mikey Williams has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and will return to the Sacramento State men’s basketball program to play for coach Mike Bibby his junior season.

A 5-star prospect out of high school where he bust onto the national prep scene with a 77-point game as a freshman in San Diego, Williams signed with Sac State before last season. He had previous college stops at Memphis State and the University of Central Florida.

With the Hornets, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 17.1 points in 21 games, missing the last stretch of games with injuries. He electrified overflow home crowds with his play, including dunks, as the Hornets went 10-4 in new Hornet Pavilion.

Williams has been a focal point in the behind-the-scenes docuseries that is airing on Roku, called “Sac State: Fear Nothing.” It is a six-part series with new episodes dropping on Fridays. The fourth installment airs this week.

“Glad to have Mikey back for another year,” Bibby said in a text to The Bee. “Great to have him for a full summer and healthy. Helps our team be stronger.”

Seven Hornets players entered the portal after the injury-ravaged club went 10-21 in Bibby’s first season. The Hornets went 6-12 in their 29th and final season in the Big Sky Conference and will enter the California-heavy Big West Conference this upcoming academic year.

Jeremiah Cherry, a center, signed with San Diego State, having grown up in the area. Forward Mark Lavrenov, The Bee’s Player of the Year out of Placer County’s Rocklin High School, signed with New Mexico State.

As of Tuesday, Prophet Johnson, Jeremiah Nyarko, Jahni Summers and Jayden Teat were in the portal. Johnson seeks an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA. Bibby told The Sacramento Bee recently that the Hornets need “help everywhere.”

The Hornets in recent weeks have signed:

  • Joao Das Chagas, a 6-10 center from Brazil who played at University of Alabama, Birmingham last season;
  • Osiris Grady, a 6-9 forward from UC Riverside who started 24 games last season;
  • Mason Hunt, a 6-7 forward who helped Pima Junior College in Arizona go 70-2;
  • Aston Pierce, a 6-foot-3, 4-star prep guard from Indiana who led his teams to two state championships;
  • Melvin Stubbs, Jr, a 6-5 defensive prep guard star out of Arizona;
  • Marcus Wilson, a 6-3 guard from UC Davis who started 33 games for the Aggies last season; and
  • Ridvan Tutio, a 6-11 forward/center from Serbia.
