Aztecs add three local standouts as part of 2027 football recruiting haul

San Diego State's high school football recruiting is expected to be completed by the start of summer for the second straight year.

SDSU has received a dozen commitments already for the Class of 2027. The Aztecs expect a dozen more before the month is out. That means SDSU will have its 25-man recruiting class "buttoned up," as coach Sean Lewis termed it last year, nearly six months before the NCAA's early signing period, which starts Dec. 3.

The class is highlighted by three local commitments, all of which have come in the last week.

The Aztecs landed La Costa Canyon High School tight end Diego Botron, Cathedral Catholic High School wide receiver Isaac Cook and San Diego High School safety Kye Cooper.

Cooper revealed his decision on Thursday morning live on KUSI.

The 6-foot-1 safety sat between his parents at a table with the hats from Boise State, SDSU and UNLV on it. Friends and family stood behind them for the announcement. When the moment came, Cooper stood up and said, "I'll be taking my talents to San Diego State," as he unzipped his jacket to reveal an SDSU T-shirt before putting on the Aztecs cap.

Cooper is the son of former Chargers linebacker Stephen Cooper, who was named in January as the Cavers’ coach after serving two years as their defensive coordinator.

Kye Cooper was a second-team all-CIF selection on defense last year, after registering 70 tackles for the Cavers. He is also a talented wide receiver, catching 64 passes for 897 yards and seven touchdowns last season; Cooper also returned kicks.

Cook, who committed on Sunday, also earned second-team all-CIF honors after catching 49 passes for 1,242 yards and 12 TDs.

He is the latest Dons standout to choose SDSU. The Aztecs' current roster includes starting running back Lucky Sutton and linebacker Tano Letuli, who starred on Cathedral Catholic’s 2021 state championship team.

Botron also committed over the weekend during his official visit to campus. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder, who throws the shot put on the Mavericks’ track and field team, fits the profile of big SDSU tight ends with a block-first mentality.

The Aztecs were the first of more than a dozen Division I schools to offer Botron a scholarship.

Others who commitment after recruiting visits over the weekend were Littleton (Colo.) Mountain Vista High School wide receiver Brooklyn Bailey, Anaheim Western High School athlete Ayden Payne and Herriman (Utah) High School edge rusher Kemper Castro.

SDSU is hosting several recruits each of the next two weekends, with the expectation that perhaps as many as a dozen players will commit.

Class of 2027 commitments began rolling in back in February, when Austin (Texas) Regents High School quarterback Jack Devine was among three players who declared for SDSU.

The trend among rising seniors in recent years has been to get their college decisions made well before the start of football season.

SDSU had a record 22 commitments by late June last year. By comparison, the Aztecs had 15 commitments in 2024 and six players in 2023 by the end of June.
