Knicks Fans Launch Jalen Brunson Petition After NBA Finals
Jalen Brunson has officially reached icon status in New York City.
The New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship since 1973 this season in large part because of Brunson's heroics. He averaged 32.6 points per game in the Finals against the San Antonio Spurs and dropped 45 points to close out the series.
"Words can't describe it, but I'll say I put a lot of time and effort into trying to be the best player I can be to try and help a team win," Brunson said after the Game 5 win. "Just really thankful to have the organization, the coaching staff, my teammates, to have my back every single day. I think that means the most to me. And my family."
To the surprise of absolutely no one, Brunson received a hero's welcome earlier this week during the Knicks' championship parade.
Although the parade is over, the celebration in New York isn't over. Knicks fans are now calling for the Hudson River to be renamed to the Brunson River.
We're not kidding. There's a petition on Change.org that has over 800 signatures.
"In recognition of his contributions and the joy he brings to New York, I propose we rename the Hudson River to The Brunson River. This renaming would serve as a lasting testament to his profound influence on our city, commemorating a moment in time when New York Knicks fans felt connected, celebrated, and proud," the petition states. "The Hudson River runs through the heart of our city, just as Brunson runs through the veins of our team. Renaming it The Brunson River would be symbolic of the passion he inspires and the legacy he is building right here in New York City."
Is Brunson the greatest Knick ever?
ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins declared this week that Brunson is the "greatest Knick of all time." Brunson's father, Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson, doesn't agree with that take.
"No disrespect, I love my son but Patrick Ewing is the greatest Knick I've ever witnessed," Rick Brunson said.
Maybe, just maybe, Rick Brunson is trying to keep his son motivated heading into the 2026-27 season.
If Brunson manages to win a second title with the Knicks, there won't be a debate for best player in franchise history.
