Chase Briscoe Reacts to Coming Up Short to Shane van Gisbergen at Sonoma

For the second straight season, Chase Briscoe finishes P2 to Shane van Gisbergen at Sonoma Raceway. This time around, it looked like he was going to finally get the job done. Even with SVG starting to fall off late, Briscoe didn't have enough to get the win.

NASCAR has become Shane van Gisbergen's playground on the road courses. Unfortunately for him, Sonoma is the last road course on the schedule for 2026. Still, it was a strong performance and one that left Chase Briscoe wondering what else he could have done.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Briscoe summed up his feelings. He won't forget this one soon.

"That one's gonna sting for a while..." Briscoe posted on social media. This is the sixth top-five of the season for the 19 team.

Everyone knows how good Shane van Gisbergen is on the road courses. So, coming so close to beating him straight up has to feel great, but no racer likes to finish runner-up. It might be the worst feeling for Briscoe to almost get to SVG's bumper in the final turn just to watch the 97 drive away to the finish line.

Joe Gibbs Racing had a strong showing at Sonoma. Chase Briscoe led the organization. Ty Gibbs was right behind in P3, and the injured Christopher Bell finished P5. Denny Hamlin would have had a strong finish as well, but was spun out and settled for a P26 finish.

Another year at Sonoma Raceway, and Briscoe has gotten closer to dethroning Shane van Gisbergen. Will 2027 be the year it happens?
