Former tennis star wins third American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

Mardy Fish can add a third American Century Championship trophy to his collection.

The former tennis star on Sunday wrapped up a round of 20 points, more than anyone in the field for Round 3, at the picturesque Edgewood Tahoe Golf course near South Lake Tahoe to secure his third win of the biggest celebrity tournament in golf.

Fish finished with a total score of 72 in the Modified Stableford format over three rounds beginning Friday. He out-paced defending champion Joe Pavelski (66 points) and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry (59 points). Former LPGA golfing great Annika Sorenstam finished fourth with 58 points.

“I am obsessed with this game,” Fish said during his pro-round interview on the NBC broadcast. “I do love playing. This is the best week of the year. It’s the best e-mail of the year when you get the invite.”

Fish, 44, won eight career titles as a professional tennis player from 2003 to 2011, and won a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics in Greece.

Fish previously won the tournament in 2020 and 2024 and reportedly plays to a plus-3.0 handicap.

The left-handed golfer went into the final hole with a 6-point lead and elected to use an iron off the tee to play it safe, which is notable after an errant drive in 2023 on the final hole cost him a win when a fan yelled during his backswing. Curry went on to eagle the hole and win the tournament.

The scoring format gives players 10 points for an albatross, 8 points for a hole-in-one, 6 points for an eagle, 3 points for a birdie, 1 point for a par and no points for a bogey. Double bogey or worse is minus-2 points.

Other notable finishes on the leaderboard: Charles Barkley finished 69th with minus-24 points, one spot behind Kings guard Zach LaVine, who finished at minus-21. Among the current and former 49ers in the field, Jerry Rice finished 42nd, Kyle Juszczyk 50th and Steve Young 55th. Former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who became the head coach of the Tennessee Titans this offseason, finished 60th while making his tournament debut.
