5 Greatest Wide Receivers in Georgia Football History

For as great the Georgia Bulldogs have been over the last 20 years, for as many great quarterbacks as they've had, you may be surprised that a bulk of the players on their list of five greatest wide receivers in history come from the 20th century.

Part of that is because Georgia has been just so balanced in the modern era. Their running backs rival any other team's. Their defenses, too. But this list of wide receivers remains impressive, even if it isn't full of names non-UGA fans will immediately recall as greats.

But they were greats. And for our money, they're the best five.

Honorable Mentions

  • Lindsay Scott (1978-1981)
  • Mohamed Massaquoi (2005-2008)
  • Tavarres King (2008-2012)
  • Malcolm Mitchell (2011-2015)

5. Fred Gibson (2001-2004)

The favorite target of the No. 2 passer in Georgia history, David Greene, Gibson ranks in the top five in Georgia history in receptions, yards and touchdowns among Bulldogs wide receivers.

Maybe the most impressive thing about Gibson during his four seasons in Athens was his consistency. From 2001 to 2004, he caught a minimum of 33 passes and recorded a minimum of 553 yards.

No, they aren't the most impressive numbers ever, but Georgia doesn't have the most impressive wide receiving numbers, either. But that's because in the 21st century, the Bulldogs scatter the football. And Gibson was one of the best to be on those receiving ends.

4. Brice Hunter (1992-1995)

Hunter was the first great Georgia wide receiver, earning All-SEC honors twice, in 1993 and 1994. He teamed with Eric Zeier to give the Bulldogs a gun-slinging offense that put up strong numbers in the early 90s.

When Hunter left after the 1995 season, he ranked first in school history in receptions and yards receiving. He still finds himself second in the former and sixth in the latter.

Hunter holds two of the top three single-season reception totals for a wide receiver, still, as well and he set the standard for just about everyone else who was considered for this list.

3. Hines Ward (1994-1997)

Much like David Palmer on Alabama's list of greatest wide receivers of all-time contrasted against his placing in the rank of Alabama's greatest players, Ward ranks lower here for Georgia than you would expect against Georgia's greatest players.

For Ward, it's because he was a running back first, then a quarterback, before finally getting a majority of his time the final two seasons as a wide receiver. He caught 107 passes for 1,615 yards with 10 touchdowns over those two seasons as quarterback Mike Bobo's favorite target.

For his career, Ward ranks 14th in receptions and 12th in yards and he's the only Bulldogs player to record 1,000 yards rushing and receiving.

Oh, and he's the best to do ever do it for the Pittsburgh Steelers, too.

2. Terrence Edwards (1999-2002)

Edwards held the SEC record for yards receiving from the time he left Georgia after the 2002 season until 2013 as he picked up 3,093 over the course of his four years. He still ranks fourth on the list behind DeVonta Smith, Amari Cooper, and Jordan Matthews.

Unsurprisingly, Edwards ranks at the top of Georgia charts when it comes to receptions (204), yards, and touchdowns (30). He put up such numbers catching passes from three different quarterbacks, too, making the totals even more impressive.

Sure, he only earned one All-SEC nod -- 59 catches for 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2001 -- but he was always, always a threat.

1. A.J. Green (2008-2010)

Eight of the top 10 receivers in Georgia history played four seasons with the Bulldogs. Green and tight end Brock Bowers are the only two who played just three. In both cases, they were an incredible three. Green earns this top spot by ranking third in yards and scores and fifth in receptions.

He was a first-team All-SEC pick as a freshman, earning the league's Freshman of the Year award. He earned first-team honors again as a sophomore.

He finished his final season as a first-team All-American despite missing four games because of a compliance issue. For good measure, he added seven Pro Bowls in his NFL career.
