Cal Expo opens harness meet; boxing at Cache Creek

Harness racing returns to Cal Expo on Saturday night to begin Watch & Wager LLC’s fall meet. With 117 horses entered, the 14-race program starts at 6:10 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

Saturday’s opener coincides with Breeders Crown Night, simulcast live from Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. Featuring 12 championship finals, the $5.8 million Breeders Crown program starts at 4:10 p.m.

Cal Expo will try to build on the success of its 2014-15 season with more low-minimum exotic wagers, including 20-cent trifectas. The 20-cent Pick Four boasts a $25,000 guaranteed pool. The Super High Five, a 20-cent pentafecta, will be offered on two races a night.

▪ Cache Creek Casino Resort will host its second boxing show of 2015 on Saturday night when Fairfield super-bantamweight prospect Manuel “Tino” Avila (18-0) faces Mexico veteran Angel Beranza (36-33-2) in the 10-round main event.

Included on the undercard, which begins at 6 p.m., in Brooks, outside Woodland, are Sacramento featherweight Alberto Torres (5-0-2), Vacaville cruiserweight Ryan Bourland (7-1) and Sacramento lightweight Pedro Moreno, making his pro debut.

The event is sponsored by Don Chargin Productions & Paco Presents in association with Golden Boy Promotions. Tickets begin at $65.
