Former Sacramento Kings center Vlade Divac hasn’t been a general manager for very long, but he makes perhaps the most impressive move of his tenure Tuesday by not firing coach George Karl.

Divac and Karl meet in Philadelphia on Tuesday and the focus of their conversation is how to fix the team’s defensive issues. Earlier reports claimed the Kings were preparing to fire Karl after the team had lost four in a row and eight of its past nine games.

Mavericks surf competition set for Friday

The Super Bowl of big-wave surfing is back for the first time since 2014, and a huge Pacific swell is expected. After weeks of epic waves, Titans of Mavericks will be held at the world-famous break off Pillar Point north of Half Moon Bay. Forecasters call for surf with 36- to 38-foot faces to arrive Friday morning.
