April 1 looms, but it may not be the pivotal date in the Colin Kaepernick saga that it’s long been billed to be. The date is when $11.9 million of Kaepernick’s 2016 contract becomes fully guaranteed. Some suspect the 49ers will release him before then to avoid being on the hook for the sum.
