Grant High graduate Booker still waiting to be drafted

Expecting a big call to punctuate what he expected to be the biggest day of his sporting life, Grant High School graduate Devontae Booker endured a four-hour-plus NFL draft marathon, but the former Utah running back’s phone did not ring.

Trent Baalke insists that unlike most of his recent draft picks with ACL injuries, third-round selection Will Redmond, a cornerback out of Mississippi State, will be ready for training camp. Baalke said the 49ers liked Redmond’s plucky style of play and loved his character.

Raiders: Ward, Calhoun selected on second day of draft

Oakland selected Jihad Ward, a defensive end from Illinois, in the second round with the 44th overall pick in the NFL draft Friday and added another defensive end when it drafted Michigan State’s Shilique Calhoun in the third round with the 75th overall selection.

A’s: Alonso hits walk-off home run against Astros

Yonder Alonso hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning to give the A’s a 7-4 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night. The Astros, who are expected to contend for the division title, lost for the eighth time in 10 games.

Giants: Peavy rocked in loss to Mets

Giants starter Jake Peavy had his shortest start without leaving due to injury since 2009, leaving during the New York Mets’ 12-run third inning of San Francisco’s 13-1 loss.

Kings: Assistant GM brings new- and old-school approach

Ken Catanella, hired Thursday by the Kings as assistant general manager, is caught between being old school and new school, making him ideal for the new role.

Furillo: Kings have new logos, now need a coach

The Kings may not have a coach, but they do have a number of new logos, as revealed in a news conference this week. The four coaches who already have spoken with Kings general manager Vlade Divac are more than acceptable replacements for George Karl.

Walton accepts Lakers’ head-coaching position

The Los Angeles Lakers hired Luke Walton as their head coach. As an assistant coach with Golden State, Walton guided the Warriors to a 39-4 record earlier this season while taking the place of Steve Kerr, who was recovering from back surgery. The Warriors went 73-9 this season, setting the mark for best regular-season record in NBA history.

Republic FC: Liverpool FC 21s coming for friendlies

Graham Smith and Paul Buckle had a successful English tour last year. The Republic FC director of football and coach secured friendlies against Liverpool FC 21s on May 21 at Bonney Field and May 25 in Reno.
