Shirley Babashoff was considered the world’s best female swimmer, but she finished second in the 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyle events at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The East German winners of those events later were found to have been doping. She hasn’t given up her fight for those three gold medals.
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team proves golden once more. On a golden night at the pool, Michael Phelps earns the 20th and 21st Olympic gold medals of his vaunted career.
