Regional digest: Hornets tied for 2nd in women’s golf event

Sagee Palavivatana shot a season-best 74 on Friday, and the Sacramento State women’s golf team is tied for second place after the first day of the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., Sac State reported.

The Hornets (301) are tied with Cal Poly for second place, one stroke behind host Northern Arizona. New Mexico State (302) is fourth and Eastern Michigan (303) fifth.

Palavivatana is tied for 11th place with her 2-over-par round. The senior is five strokes off the pace of Grand Canyon’s Charlotte Jaengkit (69). Five players are tied for second at 72.

Today’s second round may be in jeopardy because of inclement weather.

▪ Portland’s Jackson Lockwood scattered eight hits over eight strong innings, and the host Pilots (3-9) posted a 5-2 baseball victory over UC Davis (6-4-1), UCD reported. Austin March went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Aggies.

▪ Caitlin Brooks tossed a three-hitter in the Sac State softball team’s 4-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield (4-9) in the CSUN/LMU Softball Tournament in Northridge, according to Sac State. The Hornets then fell 8-0 to Cal State Northridge (16-3) in five innings. Sac State (4-9) will play College of Charleston today.

▪ UC Davis left-hander Leah Munden threw a six-hit shutout in the Aggies’ 1-0 softball victory over Iowa State (9-3) in the San Diego Classic, UCD reported. UC Davis then lost 12-4 to Grand Canyon (8-11) in five innings. The Aggies (5-9) will face No. 1 Florida, the defending national champion, and North Dakota today.

▪ Tori Edwards finished third in the heptathlon and freshman Drake Foote was sixth in the decathlon for UCDavis on the final day of the Chico Multi Classic, according to UCD.
