‘WE WANT BAMA’: Social media reacts to Sacramento State’s wild upset win over Stanford
Sacramento State fans took to social media to celebrate perhaps the biggest win in program history Saturday night.
Kaiden Bennett, a former Folsom High School star, threw the go-ahead touchdown pass to Marcus Fulcher with 1:32 remaining, giving the Hornets a dramatic 30-23 victory over Stanford.
The victory extended the Hornets’ regular-season winning streak to 22 games. It also represented a moment of triumph over former coach Troy Taylor, who left Sacramento State after four seasons to coach the Cardinal. The Hornets became the first FCS team this season to take down a team from a Power 5 conference.
After the game, Jesse Tapia, an ESPN 1320 producer who attended Sacramento State, tweeted: “WE WANT BAMA.”
Hornets coach Andy Thompson, assistant head coach Kris Richardson and offensive coordinator Bobby Fresques — the men Taylor hired to help him build a winner at Sacramento State — shared a joyous embrace as their team celebrated inside Stanford Stadium.
Front Office Sports tweeted that Stanford paid Sacramento State $625,000 to play the game, which was scheduled four years ago when Taylor was coaching the Hornets.
Jason Ross, a popular sports radio host and play-by-play announcer in Sacramento, called the game’s dramatic ending on ESPN 1320, including Bennett’s go-ahead touchdown pass to Fulcher.
Fresques caught Ross’ call on social media, tweeting: “Great play by play @JasonRoss1140.”
Ross replied: “Better call by you coach. Great win. Stingers Up.”
