Washington Huskies coach Jedd Fisch has called his star running back Jonah Coleman “exciting,” which is an understatement.

UC Davis can now attest to that.

With the Stockton native rushing for a career-high five touchdowns on just 15 carries that totaled 111 yards, the tradition-rich FBS program rolled FCS No. 8-ranked UC Davis 70-10 on Saturday night at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Twenty years ago this month, UCD stunned FBS-level Stanford with a late winning drive on the road in one of the great moments in program history. There was no such good fortune this time in the Pacific Northwest as Washington proved to be too big, too fast and too good, coming in as a 35-point favorite and then unleashing a record performance.

Washington (2-0) scored on all nine of its drives and also had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown by Denzel Boston that made it 42-10 in the second quarter as the Huskies tied a program record for points and touchdowns. Washington’s eight rushing touchdowns were the most for the program since 1951. The school started playing the sport in 1892.

UCD absorbed the worst loss in the 110-year history of the program, the previous mark coming in 1932 in a 59-0 setback to Stanford.

Coleman had touchdown runs of 15, 1, 9, 7 and 5 yards to ignite the outburst as Washington piled up 628 yards and 34 touchdowns while limiting the Aggies to 218 yards and 13 first downs.

Coleman is a 5-foot-9, 220-pound senior who has always been a package of power and burst.

In a season-opening 38-21 win over Colorado State, Coleman rushed for 177 yards and two scores after rushing for 1,053 yards and 10 TDs for the Huskies in 2024. Coleman led the Arizona Wildcats with 892 yards rushing in 2023 after he impressed as a national recruit in running for 3,319 yards and 58 touchdowns at Lincoln High School.

Coleman was recruited to Arizona by Fisch and transferred to Washington when the coach was hired in Seattle.

Hunter Ridley kicked a 45-yard field goal to pull UCD to within 14-3 in the first quarter, and Caden Pinnick had a 1-yard pass to Matteo Perez to cut it to within 28-10 in the quarter, and it was all Huskies from there.

Rex Connors had a milestone moment in the loss for UCD, recording his 291st career tackle late in the first half, setting an Aggies career mark. He is an All-American safety.

UCD has a bye on Sept. 13 and hosts Southern Utah on Sept. 20 on Back to School Night at UC Davis Health Stadium.
