Sac State football fills out coaching staff. List includes a big local name
Alonzo Carter said he would overhaul the coaching staff at Sacramento State as the freshly hired new man to head the Hornets football program, and some of the additions are familiar names.
On Tuesday, the 14th head coach in the 72-year history of Sac State football formally announced his assistant coaches and staff personnel as the Hornets continue to recruit locally and statewide with the next signing day scheduled for Feb. 4.
The Hornets’ general manager will be Jon Osterhout, the former Sacramento State All-American offensive lineman out of Roseville’s Oakmont High School and one of the greatest players in program history.
Osterhout was a four-year starter at Sac State in the trenches, the first signee for then-coach John Volek. As head coach at American River College, Osterhout elevated a strong Beavers program into a nationally ranked state powerhouse that included sending scores of players to the 4-year levels via scholarship. ARC reached six state playoff tournaments and multiple state JC Top 5 rankings under Osterhout.
Chris Parry, a member of the Sac State staff since 2019, will remain as assistant general manager, having been a part of the program’s player evaluation, roster construction and scholarship management for three Big Sky Conference championship teams, four FCS playoff squads and teams that produced five winning records.
Other hires or retentions include:
- Angus McClure as associate head coach. A former Sac State “Hammerhead” offensive lineman and later an assistant coach with the program, McClure will work with the offensive line alongside retained line coach Kris Richardson, a Hornets mainstay since 2019. Since coaching with the Hornets, McClure has had assistant-coaching stints at Nebraska, Buffalo, UCLA, Nevada and Kansas.
- Eric Kiesau as offensive coordinator. Kiesau was the offensive coordinator at Fresno State, Boise State and Auburn, and he spent the last three seasons as a quality control coach with the Florida Gators. Kiesau will work closely with Bobby Fresques, who has been with the Hornets since 2019. The former record-setting Hornets quarterback will coach quarterbacks and serve as the pass-game coordinator.
- Adam Clark as defensive coordinator. Clark the past two seasons was the defensive coordinator at Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference.
- Josh Brown as safeties coach. He was the Hornets linebackers coach in 2025 and previously coached at McNeese, UTEP, Hawaii, Nevada, Cal Poly, Kansas and Arizona State.
- Eric Scott as receivers coach. Scott was the receivers coach and passing game coordinator at San Jose State from 2021-23 where he worked with Carter, then the Spartans assistant head coach.
- Kenwick Thompson as linebackers coach. He was the defensive coordinator at Florida A&M in 2025 and worked under head coach Jeff Tedford at Cal and Fresno State with stops at San Jose State, Vanderbilt, East Carolina, UNLV and UAB.
- Dakari Monroe as cornerbacks coach. He worked with Carter at Arizona State in 2025. He played four seasons at San Jose State, twice leading the team in interceptions, and he had an NFL stint with the Kansas City Chiefs.
- Milo Austin as special teams coordinator. Austin served in the same role at Elon University, an FCS program in North Carolina.
- Otis Amey as director of player development. A two-time All-American receiver for the Hornets during his record-setting days from 2000-04 and a member of the school’s Hall of Fame, Amey still holds scores of Sac State receiving marks. He had professional stints with the San Francisco 49ers and in the Arena League and the UFL.
- Kenny Macklin as chief of staff.
- CJ Pollard, on the 2025 Hornets coaching staff as director of Recruiting, will resume that role.
