UC Davis senior forward Sydnee Fipps had a game-high 13 points to move into fourth place on the school’s all-time scoring list, while junior Alyson Doherty hit double figures for the fifth consecutive game.
But a 17-4 run by host Arizona State midway through the first half broke open a tight game en route to a 72-51 victory Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.
The loss was the fourth in the last five games for the Aggies, who fell to 4-6 in their last game before final exams this week. Arizona State, receiving votes in both The Associated Press and USA Today polls entering last week, improved to 7-1, shooting 51.7 percent from the floor.
Fipps’ big shot came with just under eight minutes to go in the game as she hit a jumper from the free-throw line for her final points of the night to surpass Paige Mintun (2006-11). Fipps, who has 1,384 career points, went 6 of 12 from the floor and added three rebounds.
